Portrait of a Lady

NZ$15,000

From the estate of a lady....This is a beautiful oil painting from the studio of Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792).

The sitter is a very famous former sex worker (can't say prostitute anymore), who went on to marry a prominent politician and orator, Charles James Fox. Elizabeth Fox was a leading figure in Georgian society: beautiful, well connected and apparently a little bit naughty.

There is another version of this painting in the Tate Gallery, dated 1780.

The frame, I suspect, is French, from Montparnesse, but gilded to suit the painting's subject.
