Pair of Antique Verdure Tapestries
This Verdure tapestry, also called a Garden Tapestry, is decorated with a forest scene featuring a heron in the foreground and a mill house away in the distance. Although is not known exactly when the first Verdure tapestries were made, by the 16th century, tapestries with formal designs derived from foliage had become immensely popular. In the last half of the 17th century, landscapes were incorporated into their design.
Both are in good condition, loomed from yarns of silk and wool and presented on a fine cotton base.
