French Hand Painted Tapestry

NZ$5,950

Very beautiful Midcentury french tapestry, reproduction of a mediaeval tapestry « The Lordly Life; Scene Galante, circa 1500 (tapestry) by French School, (16th century); National Museum of the Middle Ages and Thermes de Cluny, Paris.

The piece depicts ten characters, five ladies, two lords and three pages, two of whom have their bodies truncated at the bottom of the tapestry. A few birds take flight, and others perch in the trees, under the watchful gaze of a fox. In the centre, alongside a young man, a lady in a rich costume carries a parrot in her left hand. This is a true celebration of courtly love.

Made in the manner of Aubusson, this tapestry is hand-printed on a cotton foundation.
