Gendarme Topped Louis Philippe Mirror

We get asked for plain Louis Philippe mirrors with this top, known as the gendarme crest.

The 18th century policemen and soldiers used to wear these three sided hats  - like you see on Poldark - thus the name of the crest.

Many years ago, I bought a mirror like this in France (my French is atrocious) and I heard the dealers talking about 'gendarmes'. When I asked if the piece was stolen there was much hilarity while they explained that they were referring to the serpentine shape of the mirror.

This mirror is particularly attractive with its engraved water gilding and beaded inner edge.
