Frank Barnes Painting of S.S. Wainui

Frank Barnes, New Zealand, 1859 - 1941

A painting of the S.S. Wainui off Pencarrow, Wellington.

Oil on board

Barnes is one of New Zealand's most famous maritime artists. His work is represented in both the Auckland and Wellington Maritime Museums as well as other public collections locally and internationally.

It is believed that Barnes was a sailor who jumped ship in Wellington and worked as a shepherd while he painted, often from his musterers hut which had a view of the Cook Straight and vessels entering and leaving the Wellington Harbour.
