Our Custom Made Mirrors

We are making some stunning mirrors in the Louis Philippe style using the same process that was used in the mid 19th century, which, for your interest, is as follows:

6 - 9 coats of gesso (white) sanded back

2 coats of yellow bole (a type of clay)

2 coats of red bole

3 - 4 coats of black bole, sanded very finely.

Gilded with pure silver, pure gold (or a metal leaf).

Antiqued with clear shellac and aniline dyes.

The mouled frames can have beading on the internal edge if desired. We have various mouldings for use depending on the size of the mirror required. They look absolutely stunning.
